Description

We left our hotel in Pelling after breakfast. The weather was perfect — cool breeze, clear visibility and mountains glowing in the morning sun.

As we descended, the views of Kanchenjunga slowly disappeared behind the hills.

Just a few kilometres from Pelling, we crossed:

Geyzing (Gyalshing) – West Sikkim’s district HQ

Small local markets

Typical mountain houses

Beautiful green valley views

The road was smooth with manageable curves.

As we left West Sikkim, the terrain changed slightly — more traffic, more local settlements and broad turns.

The descent continued until we reached near Jorethang Route Junction.

We passed the busy town of Jorethang, a key transit point.
Here you see:

River Teesta flowing close

Local shops

Taxi stands

Colourful houses on both sides

From here we formally entered West Bengal, and the landscape turned more lush and dense.


The climb to Darjeeling from Jorethang is scenic:

Dense forest patches

Tea garden glimpses

Narrow winding mountain roads

Occasional waterfalls

Stunning valley views

Traffic was moderate and the route is mostly uphill.


ust 5 km before Darjeeling, we took a lunch break around 1.30 PM.

This is where the unexpected adventure began!

Our driver washed the Innova while the engine was ON and the wipers were running.
The key was inside…
And suddenly — the car locked itself!

This turned into a full-blown scene:

🔑 Driver tried:

Different spare keys from other vehicles

Tricks he found live on YouTube

Pulling the door beading

Trying to open the latch from the gap

🔪 Meanwhile 2–3 local helpers came with:

Kitchen knives

Butcher knives

Sickles

And every tool possible

It looked like we were under attack!
People around were watching as if a movie was going on.


After trying everything for nearly an hour…
There was only one option left.

The small side triangular mirror was carefully broken.
One of them pushed in a long rod and pressed the lock from inside.

Finally, the Innova door opened!
It was almost like celebrating a mini victory.

Time now: 2.30 PM


We started again and reached our hotel by around 3 PM.

It was hectic, dramatic, surprising and unforgettable —
A road trip we will always remember!
