India’s megacities are bursting at the seams. The country has 1.4 billion inhabitants, and more are added every year. Cranes and excavators on construction sites never stop working. To create new living space, the construction industry pumps massive amounts of CO2 into the already polluted air every single day. The population can barely breathe.
In the south of the country lies Auroville — a true oasis compared to cities like Mumbai or New Delhi. Auroville sees itself as a living laboratory and draws architects from around the world. Anupama Kundoo is one of them. She has spent many years researching alternative building materials. The Mumbai-born architect works with bricks made by local potters — not using energy-intensive machines, but in kilns made from the very material they are meant to fire. These regional bricks may not be as hard as industrial ones, but they are thinner and lighter. When used smartly, they can still carry heavy loads. Kundoo is also experimenting with ferrocement: how can it be used efficiently with as little steel as possible?
Auroville was planned from scratch in 1968 and sees itself as a testing ground not only for architecture, but also for new ways of living. There is no private property — the individual is part of the community, and everything belongs to everyone. Anupama Kundoo is inspired by the creativity and spirituality of the place. “The city is a lab where we face the questions of the future without fear of failure.”
"Building Visions" captures this spirit.

The four-part series BUILDING VISIONS presents architects who are seeking answers to the big questions facing our civilization today. They deal with networking, climate change, rapidly growing cities, the involvement of local communities, education and migration. They are pioneers in decent housing and sustainable building, turning creativity and humanitarian ideas into plans and implementing them together with residents. They resist with their creativity. We accompany architects who go where money is lacking, social grievances prevail and climate change threatens the environment. They face social challenges, go beyond the limits of what is possible and negotiate cultural, political, as well as economic and ecological positions. In BUILDING VISIONS, they talk about the ideas and ideals that drive them.
