A repotting that had its challenges! This rough barked Japanese Maple bonsai (Acer palmatum 'arakawa') came from an auction. This is a fist look at the roots, which were on edge! Dead roots. Airless substrate. A lot of work to clean out the rootball, getting to the heart of things!
Naturally, you do not do work this extreme normally. But in this case the inner rootball was dying. Time for a drastic cleanup.
