In this Transitions Series, we will take a deep dive into underground genres that are fun to play but can be tricky to learn. I said to know and not master because, in the evolution of DJing, no one masters everything.
Today, I approached a genre I don't play too often, and if you are not careful, the experience will not be in your favor. I showed you how a mix of Garage House or UK Garage. What I discovered they came from different areas and have different styles. Check out what I found below:
What is UK Garage or Garage House Music?
UK Garage (often abbreviated as UKG) and Garage House are closely related genres of electronic dance music with shared roots, but they developed slightly differently and have distinct sounds. Here's a breakdown to help you understand both:

🔊 Garage House (US Garage / Garage House)
• Origin: Early 1980s, New York and New Jersey, USA.
• Rooted in: House music and disco.
• Key influence: The Paradise Garage nightclub (hence the name), where DJ Larry Levan was a resident.
• Sound:
o Smooth, soulful, deep house vibes.
o Gospel-inspired vocals.
o Warm basslines, melodic chords, and 4/4 house beats.
o Often features live-sounding instrumentation or samples.
• Artists: Masters at Work, Kerri Chandler, Todd Terry, Larry Levan, Todd Edwards.

🇬🇧 UK Garage (UKG)
• Origin: Early-to-mid 1990s, London, UK.
• Rooted in: US Garage House, but sped up, chopped up, and distinctly reworked.
• Sound:
o Faster tempo (typically 130–140 BPM).
o Syncopated, skippy drum patterns and shuffled hi-hats.
o Heavy use of vocal chops, pitch-shifted samples, and basslines.
o Deep subs and bouncy rhythms.
o Emphasis on groove and swing.
• Subgenres:
o 2-step Garage (no steady 4/4 kick, more syncopated and broken),
o Speed Garage (with darker basslines and rave-style sounds),
o Bassline, Grime, UK Funky, and more later offshoots.
• Artists: MJ Cole, Artful Dodger, So Solid Crew, DJ EZ, Sunship, Wookie.
