Cantonese Delicacy: Salted Fish from Kuantan, East Coast Malaysia

The Chinese Salted Fish, or 鹹魚, is a Cantonese classic delicacy. In the early days, salted fish is the poor man’s food, because the saltiness goes a long way with plain white rice. Salted fish has become a firm dinner favorite amongst the poor population.

The people from the coastal village in Kuantan with a plentiful supply of fish began to salt and dry the fishes in the sun to preserve them for future needs. But now, this delicacy has become a luxury.
