In this video, an excerpt of a longer program by Rob McCausland, Robert and Cynthia McCausland, the diary's transcribers, speak about the process of transcribing the diary. In the longer version they answer audience questions. Also speaking here is the late Edith Hary, the former Maine State Library law librarian who played a central role in the history of the diary.
The Ballard Diary was the basis for Laurel Ulrich's Pulitzer Prize winning book, "A Midwife's Tale", published in 1991. That book was the basis for the 1998 PBS American Experience program of the same name, produced by Laurie Kahn-Leavitt.
Professor Ulrich and Harvard University have created the website DoHistory.org for people to explore the diary interactively online - http://dohistory.org.
Bob McCausland and Laurel Ulrich were both born on July 11. Laurie Kahn-Leavitt and Rob McCausland were both born on May 14.
