“Boys don’t cry!”
“South Indians are dark.”
“Girls are bad drivers.”

These are examples of stigma (stereotypes), prejudice (negative beliefs that you think are true about a person or group), and discrimination (actions against a person/group due to prejudice).

Every society has a set of beliefs that are directed towards groups of people. When these beliefs are negative they can have a strong influence on how people behave and interact with others, particularly with those who are different from us. It can sour both personal and professional relationships.

Common features of prejudice include negative feelings, stereotyped beliefs, and a tendency to discriminate against members of a group.
As an individual you may be carrying beliefs that are negative. You have grown up listening to family and friends mention them as ‘truths’ about a certain group or individual. It is time to look at your beliefs and see how they are affecting your relationships with other people.
