Program Notes:
“So you think electronic music is boring. You think it’s stupid. You think it’s repetitive. Well...it is quite repetitive.”
-Clean Bandit, “Mozart’s House”
Whether you think it started with that old Hellogoodbye song or Owl City or “Feel So Close,” the EDM revolution has undoubtedly been going on for a few years now. With this little arrangement I wanted to convey what it’s all about, or perhaps more importantly what it’s not all about. Thankfully, that guy at Elevate who puts the same beat on top of every pop song you know is not. And if you’re not into a particular subgenre (dubstep for me), thankfully Skrillex and Nero are just one part of the picture.
The process of making music with a computer is really about liberation, because as you build up synths and beats and effects from the most basic building blocks, the result is a mind-boggling, infinite amount of customization, on top of which you can impose exact dynamics, articulations, tempos, and styles. EDM, much like orchestral music, is about exploring colors and motifs, building up and breaking down, and reaching new frontiers and boundaries of sound. Basically, there are many ways to jam, and creative and talented people around the world are finding new ways every day. Here’s some things they’ve already discovered.
