A little bit of history: Opening in 1992, Mirabilandia was a new amusement park located south of Ravenna, in the region of Emilia-Romagna. Among the attractions that it opened with, Sierra Tonante was the most unique due to his nature.

Designed by William Cobb (designer of wooden coasters such as the Judges Roy Scream and the Great American Scream Machine) as his last creation together with the Ingenieur Büro Stengel GmbH studio, Sierra Tonante holds the peculiar record of being the only wooden coaster in Italy to appear at a permanent park. The ride also held the record for the tallest wooden coaster in Europe until the opening of Colossos at Heide Park Soltau in 2001. The name derives from the loud noise of the train while traversing the layout.

With a height of 35m, a lenght of 1 kilometer and a speed of 100km/h, Sierra Tonante was a unique attraction and didn't have twins in the rest of the world, and it was also the historic symbol of the entire Mirabilandia park. However, not all the good things last forever...

The continuous exposure of the wood to a humid winter climate and a dry summer climate (typical of Emilia-Romagna) took a toll on Sierra Tonante, which gradually became rougher and rougher as years went by. This caused frequent inspections and rising maintenance costs in the later years to guarantee the ride was safe. However, in 2007, the park found themselves in a hard choice: either replace all of the track and part of the wooden supports to keep the ride in operation, or demolish it and replace it with a new attractions. Following evaluations, the ride was closed and demolished at the start of 2008. Speculations of failed retracking plans, and even that the attraction's plans got lost have come as time passed following the removal of the attraction. Sierra Tonante was replaced by the Intamin Blitz coaster "iSpeed", inaugurated as the new attraction of the 2009 season. The front car of one of the two trains of Sierra Tonante is currently in exposure at the park's Drive-In restaurant
