The Battle of Rezang La, fought on 18 November 1962, is remembered as one of the greatest acts of bravery in Indian military history. It took place during the Sino-Indian War in the Chushul sector of Ladakh at an altitude of nearly 18,000 feet, where Charlie Company of the 13 Kumaon Regiment, commanded by Major Shaitan Singh Bhati, defended the strategic pass of Rezang La.

The company, consisting of 120 soldiers, faced overwhelming odds. Poorly equipped for the harsh winter and outnumbered many times over, the men held their ground against successive waves of Chinese troops. Major Shaitan Singh, despite being severely wounded, moved from trench to trench inspiring his men until his last breath. Out of 120 soldiers, 114 laid down their lives, inflicting massive casualties on the enemy—estimated at over 1,300 Chinese soldiers. Their heroic sacrifice prevented the fall of Chushul and safeguarded Ladakh.

Among the few survivors was Hon. Capt. Nihal Singh, who was taken prisoner of war by the Chinese army. After days of captivity in extremely harsh conditions, Nihal Singh was rescued by a Dog. But during his attempt to return, he became disoriented in the blizzards and deep snow of Ladakh. The frozen wilderness left him exhausted, and he lost all sense of direction.

It was then that fate intervened in a miraculous way. A stray dog appeared suddenly on the snowbound heights and began walking ahead of him. Unsure but desperate, Nihal Singh followed the animal. The dog led him along a pugdundee—a narrow trail—through the snowbound terrain, guiding him across the mountains until he reached Indian territory safely. Nihal Singh always believed that the dog was no ordinary animal but a divine presence, sent by God to save his life. To him, the dog was either God Himself or His messenger, ensuring his safe return when all hope seemed lost.

For his extraordinary courage, Major Shaitan Singh was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra and Hon Capt nihal Singh received Sena Medal. The Rezang La Memorial at Chushul honors the supreme sacrifice of the 13 Kumaon Regiment, bearing the immortal lines:
"How can a man die better than facing fearful odds, for the ashes of his fathers, and the temples of his gods."

The Battle of Rezang La, along with stories like that of Nihal Singh’s miraculous survival, continues to inspire generations as a testament to valor, sacrifice, and faith amidst impossible odds.
