If you want to go faster at hyrox? our shoes choice can be one of quickest and easiest way to shave minutes of our finish time. So is this the ultimate Hyrox super shoe?
I’ll be diving into specifically how this shoes performs in each of the 8 exercises stations and 8km+ of running that comprise the HYROX race workout and how it compares the deviate nitro 2.
firstly the weight, at 194g , it feels an incredibly lightweight shoe, secondly in terms of the upper the new multidirectional ultraweave material this in constructed of is incredibly breathable and thin. Thirdly the feel of the rear nitro infused foam in the heel of the shoe has got significantly more flex and propulsion than the deviate nitro 2.
Briefly diving into the specs With a stack height of 40mm in the rear of the shoe and 32mm in the front, we have a heel-to-top drop 8mm.
In terms of grip on the shoe, both the forefoot and rear of the shoe contain a layer of puma grip, this is noticeable thinner than the on the regular deviate nitro.
The shoe contains a premium carbon fibre puma plate which runs the complete length of the shoe, this is sandwiched between puma nitro elite foam cushioning, which is very responsive.
The question I think matter most is how this shoe holds up and perform in workouts, training and the exercise stations that comprise the hyrox race workout, so let’s dive in.
In terms of speed work running in this shoe, it has comfortably delivered of helping me complete training sessions in excess of my race day pace. This is another reason why I think this particular model propels Puma into the race day super shoe big league.
It performs equally well on those slower paced steady runs, but it worth keeping it as predominantly a race day shoe, that you’ve bedded into pre-race.
On the ski erg its provides a steady base to pulling a solid ski pace, I felt stable and solid under foot through the 1000m.
On the sled push you’ve ample grip to keep that sled moving even on that more slippery track we tend to find in the gym vs hyrox race venue carpet.
on sled pull the good news is this wasn’t an issue and I got as much traction in the elite 3 model shoe as I have previously in the deviate nitro 2 which has noticeable thicker grip in the rear of the shoe.
The burpees were a stand out station for the shoe, that propulsive spring really comes into its own, where you can feel that return on energy through the carbon plate powering you forward on your jumps.
On the farmers kettlebell carry, I did find that I needed to keep my weight over the middle and centre of the shoe, that soft cushion rear of the shoe which is excellent for return on energy when running, can absorb a lot of that weight slowing you down slightly
On the lunges, this was the only exercise station where I felt some degree of instability
If you are someone who is prone to ankle rolling, this is something to be aware of and consider.
Both the points I’ve make relation to the kettlebell farmers carry and lunges are things I’ve noted in previous videos and are equally applicable to other brand top tier race day shoes.
For the wall balls, the shoe provides a firm base to throw and receive the ball from.
Now there is 1 big problem with relying shoes alone to go faster at hyrox - they will only take you so far, it you really want go faster at Hyrox you need to work on your exercise technique and for tips on that you want to watch and save the playlist of videos here next.
