German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pushed back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticism of a €120 million fine imposed on social media platform X, saying that all foreign companies — including American firms — must follow German and EU laws when operating in Europe.
Merz said U.S. companies face sanctions just as European firms do in America, adding that Germany will enforce its rules equally. Trump had called the European Commission’s penalty “nasty” after regulators found X violated transparency requirements.
Merz also said he discussed Armenia’s bid to join the EU during a joint press conference with Armenia’s prime minister.
