Adjust your normal breathing pattern for the underwater environment, taking in consideration the oxygenation of your body, CO2 retention and how breathing affects your neutral buoyancy!

If you want to improve your gas consumption for scuba diving, you got the wrong idea... Your objective should always be to BREATHE BETTER, not less!
When you'll breath more efficiently, you will also decrease your air consumption as a side effect!

I hope my breathing tips for diving will help you improving your skills for recreational diving as well as for technical and cave diving! There are many breathing exercises for diving, to improve control of the diaphragm and tolerance to increased CO2... but always remember to exhale properly and don't hold gas into your lungs!!!
