Interim President of University College Cork, Professor John O’Halloran, welcomes you all to Cork Discovers, a really exciting opportunity to learn about research.
Professor O’Halloran has had the privilege, for the last 20 years, of chairing the BT Young Scientist Committee and he talks about how amazing it is to see amazing young talent.
“There’s two parts to that talent. One is the one that we all see on television but there’s another small group which is the Primary Science talent where people are going in and making things. There are big bangs, there is smoke, but actually there are some
really interesting ideas being developed by young people just like you.”
Professor O’Halloran then goes on to speak about the amazing research that takes place in University College Cork.
“Our scientists have to compete globally to fund that because sometimes it costs money sometimes to do research. Our scientists have been really lucky and capable at doing that, whether it’s in food, in the microbiome we call it – the bacteria that live in your gut, whether it’s the plastic in the ocean, whether it’s hip hop music. My son is a musician, he’s in Los Angeles currently, he’s a UCC graduate and he just loves hip hop music and that’s his life. My own work as a zoologist we worked with bees, the bees that sting you and how we can monitor those bees and see how they influence our lives. Looking at the sky, even if you go out tonight, hopefully the clouds aren’t there, just have a look up at the sky, have a look at the moon, just think of the amazing work going on at University College Cork.”
We’d normally be able to ask you to come to campus and last year 3000 people came to Cork Discovers events in UCC as well as in pop up locations all over the City.
But this year, a year like no other, Cork Discovers is coming straight to your screens LIVE!
So visit CorkDiscovers.org to discover how Cork based researchers are changing the world!
Cork Discovers is proudly brought to you by UCC Academy, University College Cork, Teagasc, Cork City Council, CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory and British Council with special thanks to our media partners 96FM and Irish Examiner.
