Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez - 15 Years of Friendship

Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez first met in 2002 on the set of Barney & Friends. They were just 7 years old at the time and became inseparable. Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez have had a long history together, dating back to when they were child actors on Barney & Friends. Over the years, they went from the best of friends, to a shattered friendship, to finally getting back on good terms.

In 2008 the girls started doing YouTube videos together. They announced their Disney Channel Original Movie Princess Protection Program in their first ever vlog. This was the first time the girls were on camera together since their Barney days. Demi and Selena continued to make YouTube videos throughout 2008. During the last video they made together, the girls plugged Demi's LA concert. On January 24, 2010 Demi was signing autographs in the UK when a fan asked her, "How's Selena?" In response Demi said, "Ask Taylor!" This is the first time Demi showed signs of her friendship with Selena being in jeopardy. She was upset that Selena was spending so much time with her new famous friend, Taylor Swift.

In May 2010 Demi opened up to Girl's Life about her friendship with Selena, and confirmed that they were no longer close. "We’re both busy, and I wish the best for her," she said. "True friends don’t let their friends or family be mean to you. If you can’t trust somebody, you can’t be friends with them.” On November 1, 2010 Demi checked into rehab. According to Demi, Selena was one of the few people who called her while she was there and it meant a lot. "Selena [helped me] because she called me crying when I was in there and was just so worried,” Demi said. “I was like, ‘Look, I should be the one crying, it’s all good!’ But she was so worried and ever since then we’ve gotten closer.”

Demi got out of rehab in March 2011. On August 7 of the same year, Selena and Demi reunited at the Teen Choice Awards and seemed to be BFFs again. The last time Selena and Demi were spotted together in public was on August 28, 2011 at the MTV Video Music Awards. In 2013, Demi spoke out about her friendship with Selena saying, "We've been through a lot together, we've had periods of times where we grew apart and we just didn't really talk… Now we are in a place where I think we realized that life is so short and that when you have people in your life that love you so much then, you should just always be around them."

In 2015, Lovato and Gomez followed each other again on social media and Gomez gushed on her pal's birthday: “IM so grateful you were born," with Lovato tweeting back: "I'm so glad you were born too... :P #forever #nomatterwhat."

In 2018, the lovefest continued, as the two tweeted to each other about their songs, with Lovato writing: “@selenagomez Loving your new song Fetish, we've come a long way since our Barney days” and Gomez tweeting back: “Yes we have - just listening to Sorry Not Sorry! You slay as always. So happy for you!”

It seems like they are on solid ground again and fingers are crossed that they stay that way. When Lovato was asked about Gomez's recent kidney transplant, the singer had nothing but love and support for her longtime friend, telling People: “I think that she is a very strong woman. I'm very happy and proud of her.”
