A Walk in Whitemoor Nature Reserve March Cambridgeshire

Whitemoor Nature Reserve is one of the less known nature reserves in March. It is a beautiful site extending north-south from near Rings End Nature Reserve and the Twenty Foot River, passing by the prison, towards March Station. There is no car park. It is home to many species of trees and wild flowers. The 'Braza' ballast pits used to supply water to the steam engines are homes to many birds fish and animals.
The site used to be the home of the largest railway marshalling yard in Europe begun in 1882. In 2011 the site was reopened and remodelled by Network Rail. The path which passes by the lake was the former route of the Up Hump line. The reserve started taking shape during the late 1980s and early 1990s as part of the construction of HMP Whitemoor.
There is a memorial in remembrance of the nine crew members who died when their Vickers Wellington Bomber collided with a line of coal laden railway trucks on November 24th 1941.
