The Siege of Tyre in 332 BC was one of Alexander the Great’s most challenging and strategic victories, showcasing his relentless determination and military ingenuity. The Phoenician city of Tyre, a heavily fortified island stronghold about 1 kilometer off the coast, refused to surrender to Alexander, forcing him into a prolonged siege. Without a strong navy, Alexander ordered the construction of a massive causeway, using debris from the abandoned mainland city, to reach the island. The Tyrians fiercely resisted, launching naval raids and fire ships to destroy the causeway, but Alexander relentlessly rebuilt it, using siege towers and artillery to bombard the walls. After seven months, Alexander’s fleet—bolstered by newly acquired ships from conquered Phoenician cities—blockaded Tyre, allowing his forces to breach the walls. His troops stormed the city, massacring much of the population and selling thousands into slavery as punishment for their defiance. The fall of Tyre secured Macedonian control of the eastern Mediterranean, eliminated a key Persian naval base, and further cemented Alexander’s reputation as an unstoppable conqueror.
