Dear friends, many of us were young mothers or newlyweds back in the swinging sixties, full of hope with flowers in our hair and dreams of peace and love after Woodstock.
But on December 6, 1969, at the Altamont Speedway in California, that beautiful dream turned into a nightmare.
What was meant to be a joyful free concert with the Rolling Stones, Santana, and others ended in terrible violence – four precious lives lost, including young Meredith Hunter, only 18, stabbed right in front of the stage while the Hells Angels tried to keep order.
We watched the news with heavy hearts, holding our own children close, wondering how the music we loved could bring such sorrow.
Fifty-six years later, on this December day, I still think of those families who lost their babies that night, and how it felt like the innocent spirit of our youth slipped away.
Let us remember with kindness, pray for healing, and cherish the peace we have now.
The day the sixties died – but love lives on in our hearts.
