These Killer Whales specialize in hunting dolphins!
Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) killer whales are a distinct ecotype of orca found primarily in the warm, offshore waters of western Mexico, Central America, and sometimes as far south as Peru or north to Southern California.
Sightings in Southern California, such as San Diego, are rare but often involve the same group of individuals. Macho, the large male with a 6 ft. dorsal is a clear stand out and not always seen when encouraging this pod of ETPs. If trends continue we should see them again this winter or maybe sooner 😉
