Presenting the Asa Di Vaar (Full Path) - Sant Sujan Singh Ji Maharaj (Nanaksar Kaleran Wale).
.
Sant Sujan Singh Ji was blessed with a mellifluous voice filled with pure love for Waheguru Ji. The passion in his voice and the words spoken by him would imbue the Sangat with such love as well. In most of the recordings below, the voices of the Sangat can be heard in the background and they echo the emotion in Sant Sujan Singh Ji’s voice. In regards to Sant Ji’s life, most of the information below was obtained from the book, ‘Punjab De Parsidh Raagi Rababi’ written by Sardar Balbir Singh Kanwal.
Sant Sujan Singh Ji was born into the home of Bhai Gian Singh and Mata Bharava Bai on 25th of October 1911 in the village of Bagh in the Jhang Maghiana district of Pakistan. Sant Ji took his initial training in music from Pandit Narotam Das Ji of Multan. Pandit Narotam Das Ji moved to Bombay following the partition in 1947 and he lived there until he passed away at the age of 106. It is said that Sant Sujan Singh Ji only spent around 6 months under the guidance of Pandit Narotam Das Ji and that he was naturally blessed with musical talent by Waheguru Ji.
One of his first Kirtan performances occurred in Lahore and it created such an impact on the Sangat that the ‘Shabad bheta’ he received amounted to 105 rupees which was a huge sum in those days. Sant Ji moved to Amritsar in 1945 and during his time there, he used to perform Asa Di Vaar in Sri Harmandir Sahib. It was around this time that he got the opportunity to meet Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji who became mesmerized by his Kirtan. Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji blessed him with the words, “O Gurmukh! You do such beautiful Kirtan. Why do you wander around? You should settle in one place and people from all over will come and listen to you in your own home”. With these words etched in his mind, Sant Sujan Singh Ji moved to Delhi in 1950. There are 3 Gurdwaras in Delhi associated to Sant Sujan Singh Ji; one located in Karol Bagh, another in Rajouri Garden and the third in Tilak Nagar. The Gurdwara in Tilak Nagar is currently being maintained by Ustad Jaswant Singh Ji, who was a close associate of Sant Sujan Singh Ji. Ustad Ji has narrated many interesting accounts about Sant Ji, some of which can be found in the book written by Sardar Balbir Singh Kanwal.
