In today’s episode of Frankly Speaking with Navika Kumar on Times Now, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, joined for an exclusive conversation. The discussion focused on the Waqf Amendment Act and the ongoing protests and violence in West Bengal's Mushidabad, Dhuliyan.
When questioned about the government's focus on Waqf, Rijiju stated, “The Waqf Amendment Act is the need of the hour.” Responding to Navika Kumar’s pointed question — “Why was only Waqf chosen to be corrected? This approach is being seen as anti-minority. How would you defend the government?” — the minister clarified that Waqf properties with valid documentation will retain their status and remain unaffected.
He further emphasized that if any provision of the Act is found to violate the Constitution, the Supreme Court will review it. However, he warned against political attempts to undermine the law, stating: “After so much deliberation went into passing the Waqf Amendment Act, if someone tries to derail the process through the back door for political gains, it’s not a welcome step.”
Navika Kumar also asked, “Are you breathing a sigh of relief that the Supreme Court hasn’t stayed the Waqf Act yet, and the government has secured a seven-day reprieve to file its affidavit?”—to which Rijiju responded confidently.
