The Holmes Medical Museum is located on the site of the first hospital in Baldwin County, the Sibley Holmes Memorial Hospital, in downtown Foley, Alabama. The hospital served the area from 1936 to 1958, when South Baldwin Regional Medical Center opened in Foley. Both hospital and doctor offices are located on the second floor. Dr. Sibley Holmes and his son, William C. Holmes practiced there. The ground floor of the museum was previously occupied at different times by a grocery store, phone company office, a 5 and 10 cent store and Wright’s Drug Store.
In addition to Sibley Holmes serving as the town doctor and surgeon, he was Foley mayor from 1930 to 1933 and an Alabama state senator in the 1920s. It was Dr Sibley’s dream to have a hospital in Baldwin County. He did not live to see the this happen, but his son and daughter-in-law were able to make it happen.
Dr. William C. Holmes, often referred to as Dr. Buddy, operated the hospital along with his wife, Philomene, who was a nurse. Philomene assisted in all aspects of running the hospital, from delivering babies to taking x-rays and keeping the patients ledgers. Philomene ran the hospital several years during WWII, while the doctor was away at war.
