One of our acquaintances has passed away; news that has cast a heavy shadow over our hearts and plunged my grandmother’s home into a deep, sorrowful silence. Grief has quietly spread among the family members, settling into tired eyes and furrowed brows. My grandmother, more than anyone else, has withdrawn into herself, as if every word of comfort breaks before it can reach her. The nomadic women attend the funeral wearing their cloaks in a distinctive way, carefully adapted to the burial ceremony. Their clothing is not only a sign of mourning, but also a silent language of respect and sympathy. Every step they take, every gentle movement of their hands, tells the story of an ancient tradition that gives dignity to sorrow and makes grief a shared experience. Among these customs, there is another tradition rooted in solidarity. To help the family of the deceased, some guests are taken into other homes, where they are welcomed, cared for, and cooked for, so that the burden of grief and exhaustion may be slightly eased for the bereaved. This collective compassion is a bond that makes mourning more bearable. Today as well, several men and women are guests in Farideh’s home. The house is full, yet its fullness carries the pulse of life— the sound of cooking pots, the quiet movement of guests, and the exchanged glances that convey support without words. In the heart of this deep sorrow, it is this presence that lights a small flame of comfort.
