About the Talk:
In recent years, neurodiversity has become a pivotal concept in our understanding of neurodevelopmental diagnoses. There is an increasing demand for clinicians to move away from viewing neurodevelopmental differences solely as symptoms of disease or deficit, and instead recognize them as part of the spectrum of normal human diversity - similar to other factors of diversity such as race, ethnicity, and gender identity. This presentation, grounded in the APA’s guidelines for addressing cultural diversity, will emphasize the need to approach the care of neurodivergent individuals with an inclusive mindset and respect for all. It will also review the ethical dilemmas and challenges encountered by the neurodiversity movement. The presentation will provide tools and strategies for implementing affirming practices for neurodivergent children and their families, taking into account a range of diagnostic profiles.
