Steelshad for Lake Ontario Smallmouth

Fun day fishing a community hole for the first time this season.

The north side of Calf Island usually has a handful of bangers that stay shallow after the spawn and a bunch of 10 to 14-inch shakers that roam around that area.

Today was no different than any July trip I've made out there since 1986. Same stuff just using a new lure, the Steelshad. I've been fishing this lure with clients for the past four years and these smallies ate it again today.

Crazy thing today is every time I hooked into a bigger class of fish they've head straight to a rock point covered in zebra muscles and they 'd cut my line to win their freedom.

This occurred three times today, so I have to acknowledge these scrappy smallies know how to use their environment to their advantage.

Super fun session and if you're looking for an area to teach a novice angler how to use artificial lures this is a great location to do it.
