West Coast Main Line Trains at Crewe on May 15th 2025

2nd visit to Crewe on the West Coast Main Line as well being the Junctions for the North Wales Coast Line, Crewe to Manchester Line and Welsh Marches Line.

Featuring services from Avanti West Coast, East Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway, Northern and Transport For Wales plus a bit of freight as well.

On the day of filming disruption occurred on Avanti West Coast North of Preston between Lancaster and Carlisle in the Northbound direction due to Overhead Wire Problems which during filming some Glasgow and Edinburgh services were held on the Platforms for quite some time.

Being one of the most significant railway stations in the world the station of Crewe was opened in 1837 on the Grand Junction Railway which was to link up services on the Liverpool & Manchester Railway and London & Birmingham Railway

The Chester & Crewe Railway opened in 1840 which today forms the North Wales Main Line to Holyhead via Chester and Llandudno

In 1846 the London & Birmingham Railway was merged into the London & North Western Railway which ran until 1923 when it was merged into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway.

The station has been rebuilt twice firstly in 1867 and it's most recent rebuild of the present layout dates from 1985

Todays layout consists of 12 Platforms in total

Platform 1 used by Avanti West Coast services from London Euston and terminating Northern Services from Manchester Piccadilly via Stockport or Manchester Airport
Platform 2 & 3 used by LNWR services from Stafford via Stoke-on-Trent as well as East Midlands Railway to and from Newark Castle via Derby
Platforms 5 & 6 used by through services from Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern Railway and Transport For Wales
Platforms 7 used by terminating London Northwestern Railway services to and from London Euston
Platforms 8 used by terminating Transport For Wales services from Shrewsbury via the Welsh Marches Line whilst Platform 9 is used by services to and from Chester and Holyhead
Platforms 11 and 12 are mainly used by Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway

Avanti West Coast mainly operated by Class 390 Pendolinos with fast Glasgow Services running non stop through here although some that serve here run via Birmingham New Street

Since 2024 Class 805 Everos now have taken over the former workings of the Class 221 Voyagers operating services to North Wales and sometimes Birmingham New Street which run under electric power as far as here but switch to diesel workings for the non electrified North Wales Line.

The Class 807 Everos being electric now share workings alongside the Class 390 Pendolinos for Birmingham New Street, Liverpool Lime Street and Blackpool North however at the time of filming both the 805s and 807s are limited to a top speed of 110mph

London Northwestern Railway mostly operate Class 350s to and from London Euston and Birmingham New Street to Liverpool Lime Street via Wolverhampton although new Class 730/2s entered service a few weeks later on June 9th which will take over from the 350/2s.

Transport For Wales operate services to Manchester Piccadilly from Carmarthen and Crewe to Chester although occasionally a few services a day operate to Holyhead nowadays operated by a mixture of Class 197s and some Cardiff Central to Manchester Piccadilly operated by loco hauled sets consisting of a Class 67 loco with a DVT Trailer and MK4s.

East Midlands Railway services originate from here to and from Newark Castle via Derby nowadays operated by Class 170 Turbostars having previously operated on Transport For Wales.

Northern services terminate via Platform 1 from Manchester Piccadilly with services provided by Class 323s and Class 331s respectively.
