It’s a proud day for Indian tennis and fans of Vijay Amritraj and Leander Paes!
TWO Indian tennis stars being inducted in the International Tennis Hall of Fame this week. I have attended many inductions over the years, but few have a class that Vijay does! I met Vijay number of times!
He remembers his fans by their first name!
To the best of my knowledge, he is the only tennis player who represented his country/India in Davis in four decades( from late 60s to early 90s). He was the most respected tennis player on the tour! Even while he was playing against an American, fans would route for Vijay in Newport!
On the tour, he beat players on the top of the game like Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg but the most memorable historical accomplishment was handing John McEnroe one of his three losses, while McEnroe was on the top of his game. 1984 was McEnroe’s year. He walked in Cincinnati with a 59 –1 record only to gracefully lose to Vijay Amritraj!
Such was Vijay’s legacy!!
There’s not much I can say about this LEGEND!!
Leander Paes is regarded as one of the greatest doubles tennis players of all-time and holds the record for the most doubles wins in the Davis Cup.
He holds a career Grand Slam in men's doubles and mixed doubles. Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi were also the 1st pair in Open era history to reach the men's doubles finals of all 4 Grand Slams in the same calendar year(1999). He became the first Indian athlete since 1952 to win an individual Olympic medal In 1996 when he took the men's singles tennis bronze medal at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996.
