This is a BONUS DRILL for the 2nd edition of our drill-book due out by the end of the year.
EQUIPMENT:
Ideal: 2 or 3 balls
Minimum: 1 ball
PARTICIPANTS:
Ideal: 3 athletes + coach observing
Maximum: 6 athletes + coach observing
Minimum: 1 athletes + coach assisting.
DRILL OBJECTIVE
This objective of this drill is to loosen up the body and raise body temperature in preparation for more strenuous activity.
It will also increase the athlete's awareness of how current environmental conditions affect the ball. The drill also allows athletes to get a high number of setting reps and footwork training in getting around the ball to face the setting target.
DRILL DESCRIPTION
The athlete at the net (athlete 1 in the diagram) starts the drill by setting the ball about 3 m (or 10 ft) towards the service line in a high arc. After making this 'first' contact the athlete runs under their own ball and proceeds to set it directly up and down to themselves.
Immediately following this 'second' contact the athlete turns towards the other athlete in the drill (labeled 2 in this diagram) and sets the ball to them.
The drill is then repeated.
Athletes should begin the drill with 2 contacts at the net and 2 contacts away from the net and work towards only making 2 contacts.
DRILL VARIATIONS / MODIFICATIONS
• Athletes can then increase the difficulty by reducing contacts at the net to 1 and finally contacts away from the net to 1.
TEACHING POINTS:
1 It is important that athletes follow through the ball with their body on the ball set away from the net.
2 Athletes need to move very fast to the ball set away from them in order to be able to get around and face the target. This will reduce the chance of a double contact or a carried ball.
