Tea originated in Southwest China, Northeast India, Tibet, and North Burma region. Tea cultivation is an example of plantation agriculture.
Tea is cultivated around the world today, mostly in tropical and subtropical regions.
Assam is the largest tea-producing state in India. Apart from Assam, India’s other major tea-producing states are West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka.
Tea is also grown in different states of India such as Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram.
Assam now produces nearly 700 million kg of tea annually and the state also generates annual foreign exchange earnings estimated at an equivalent to Rs 3,000 crore.
In 1823, Robert Bruce discovered wild tea plants growing wild in the upper Brahmaputra Valley.
In January 2023, the first event to celebrate 200 years of Assam tea took place in Jorhat. It was organised under the banner of the North Eastern Tea Association (NETA).
On that occasion, a book ‘Two hundred years of Assam Tea 1823-2023: the genesis and development of Indian Tea’, written by tea researcher and writer Pradip Baruah, was released.
In India, the tea industry is the major foreign exchange earner. Tea from India is exported to countries such as Russia, Iran, Germany, Bangladesh, UAE, Poland, and Pakistan.
The Orthodox Assam Tea received GI Tag in 2007.
