We Just Flew Across the Country to Help Restore a George Barris Custom from the 1950s 👏🏼

We just flew 6.5 hours across the country to help an 80-year-old legend chase a dream… and it just so happens that dream is restoring a custom car of the 1950s.

Ross Galitsky has spent his life surrounded by classic cars, but one build changed everything for him: a wildly customized 1956 Mercury, known as the Purple People Eater. Rumor has it, this car was originally customized by none other than George Barris — the godfather of custom car culture. That alone makes it a historical gem.

Ross first saw this car when he was around 15 years old, and it lit the spark that sent him down a lifetime path of custom building. Now, at 80, he’s more inspired than ever, especially after watching our videos and feeling like maybe he still can bring this car back to life.

That inspired Chad to do something special: fly across the country to roll up his sleeves and help Ross restore this custom time capsule… not to modern specs, but back to its original wild and wonderful form.

Ross has a second Mercury parts car that Chad is going to dissect, cut, and repurpose to bring the Purple People Eater back to life. This isn’t just another build. This is a tribute — to Barris, to Ross, to an era of fearless design and wild imagination.
