SAI LAU KONG FISHING VILLAGE AND PENINSULA
We visit a small and remote fishing village with two or three households at the tip of the extreme NE of NT. We'll take bus 275R from Tai Po to Wu Kau Tang and follow the path along the stream valley passing villages of Kau Kam Tsui, Mui Tin, Sam A Chung estuary to Sam A Tsuen. Then we`ll continue eastwards on little walked & sometimes bushy trails passing the ghost village of Ngua Shi Wu until we reach Sai Lau Kong. In return we might walk along the rocky shoreline south of the peninsula
WalkOnHill‧Sai Lau Kong | Yan Chau
Start: Minibus 20R from Tai Po Market Railway Station, get off at Wu Kau Tang
End: Minibus 20R to Tai Po Market Railway Station
Wu Kau Tang
The trail starts from the the concrete path on the left of the pavilion with a map board beside the carpark at the end of Wu Kau Tang Road. Along the path down, turn left soon at the junction to Sam A Tsuen. At the next fork, take the right path to Kau Tam Tso according to the signpost. Head the trail, it goes forward at the junction after joining the muddy path. (Taking the upper left fork could also go to Sam A Wan but via Lai Tau Shek.)
Sheung Miu Tin and Ha Miu Tin
Follow the sylvan path that heads generally east. Along the way, the range of Tiu Tang Lung is towering at your upper left. Beyond Sheung Miu Tin, it winds alongside a brook. There are also some abandoned ancient houses near Ha Miu Tin. Head the trail, it comes to Sam A Chung with a camping site. You could see the transparent water from the stream and the mangroves along the shore. After skirting along the shore, it arrives at Sam A Wan within Yan Chau Tong Marine Park.
Along the coast, it gives a sublime landscape fashioning from the mongroves, the shallow inlet and the water plane as a mirror. Head the trail, it comes the cross-junction of Sam A Tsuen after joining the concrete path. There are some restaurants in Sam A Tsuen. Taking right fork to the pier could see a picturesque nature scene of Sam A Wan.
Ngau Shi Wu
Shan
At
the cross-junction of Sam A Tsuen, take the way to Lai Chi Wo according to the signpost. Not far ahead on the right, there is an obscure path up to Ngau Shi Wu Shan beside the public toilet (behind the railing at roadside). It begins with a flight of disrepair wood steps uphill. Afterward it becomes gentle and obvious. Along the way, there are also some ribbons bound on plants as marks for guidance of the way. Sometimes you could see some metal covers of drain on the ground. After skirting the hillside and passing through a small flatland, it leads down to the abandoned Ngau Shi Wu village. Along the old concrete road ahead, it comes to the coast. The inlet of Ngau Shi Wu Wan is scenic and tranquil.
The public toilet
Through the disrepair short bridge, it skirts along the rocky shore to the right. Passing through the pier and several inlets, it arrives at Sai Lau Kong. There are only few old houses. You could see the famous small island of Yan Chau from there which shape is like a seal or a small hat. Looking far around, Crooked Island and Double Island are also with the sight. Afterward, continuing on along the coast ahead, it would require to clamber in part of the later section. Moreover, you could see different rocks along the shore. Beyond Au Yue Tsui and throught coves, it leads to the pier of Sam A Wan and then returns to the cross-junction of Sam A Tsuen.
Wu Kau Tang via Lai Tau Shek
From the cross-junction, take the way via Lai Tau Shek to Wu Kau Tang. Passing through the restaurant of Sam A Tsuen, it becomes uphill. The trail winds gently up along the hillside. Along the way toward south, you could see the undulated rolling hills along Plover Cove Reservoir. Tiu Tang Lung on the upper right is also within the sight. Afterward, it leads down to the junction and joins the path that passed before. Along the path to the right to retrace your steps, through Kau Tam Tso, it returns to the minibus station of Wu Kau Tang.
