Nebraska is deep into the dog days of the season, and middle blocker Andi Jackson says the grind is real. But despite the schedule, the Huskers remain perfect. Nebraska sits at 22-0 overall and 12-0 in Big Ten play, the lone unbeaten team left in Division I volleyball and a unanimous No. 1 in this week’s national polls.
Head coach Dani Busboom Kelly said she isn’t letting her team get comfortable.
“We’ve been focused on getting better here and there, competing with each other,” Busboom Kelly said. “Our players understand how thin the line is this year. There are players all over the country who can take over matches and get hot, and you can find yourself in a tough situation really quick in our sport.”
Nebraska survived close opening sets at a ranked Wisconsin and at home against Oregon before pulling away. Jackson said the team knew their first-set defense wasn’t up to standard but responded the right way.
“Everyone knows our first-set defense wasn’t our best ever,” Jackson said. “Adjusting in the second and third sets, and then at Wisconsin, we handled things there. It felt so smooth. Our team felt so connected on the court.”
Freshman outside hitter Virginia Adriano continues to adjust to Big Ten volleyball, saying the pace and intensity are unlike anything she experienced in Italy.
“When I first got here, I didn’t really know a lot about other teams or the rivalries,” Adriano said. “Once I understood Texas, Wisconsin, Penn State — great atmospheres, loud gyms — it’s always cool to play in places like that.”
Nebraska’s next two matches come against Illinois on Nov. 6 at the Devaney Center, followed by a road test at No. 22 Minnesota on Nov. 8. Busboom Kelly said Illinois features a setter she competed against during her time at Louisville, and Minnesota remains dangerous despite early injuries.
“Illinois has a setter I played against for two years at Florida State — she’s a baller,” Busboom Kelly said. “Minnesota had the injury bug early on, but they’re finding ways to win and stay in the top 25. They have one of the best outsides in the country and a really good young setter. It’s always hard to play at the Pav.”
Nebraska also brought home individual honors this week. Middle blocker Rebekah Allick was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week (third this season, twelfth in career), and setter Bergen Reilly earned Co-Setter of the Week (second this season, fourth in career). Busboom Kelly credited their commitment to the game plan.
“They’re not doing anything special,” Busboom Kelly said. “They’re just playing inside the game plan and doing what’s needed for this team to stay undefeated.”
