In June 2021, I skated through the 99 Cent Store on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood like I always do — just riding through aisles, exploring spaces, documenting real life in motion.
I didn’t know it then, but this turned out to be a small time capsule from the final years of a chain that lasted over 40 years.
99 Cents Only Stores started in 1982 in Los Angeles, built around one idea: everything for 99 cents. The founder, Dave Gold, believed 99¢ was a “magic number” that made people buy anything.
The chain eventually grew to 371 stores across California, Nevada, Arizona, and Texas.
But decades of inflation, rising costs, pandemic fallout, and retail theft caught up.
By April 2024, the company announced it was shutting down all remaining stores and later filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Most locations were liquidated and closed within weeks.
So this simple skate run — Sunset Blvd, June 2021 — ended up capturing a moment right before a piece of West Coast retail history disappeared.
