The history of “Jesus Loves the Little Children” goes back to the late 19th century in the United States. The song was written by Clarence Herbert Woolston (1856–1927), an American preacher and lyricist.
The tune it’s usually sung to was composed by George Frederick Root (1820–1895). Root originally wrote the melody for a Civil War song called “Tramp, Tramp, Tramp” (1864), a marching song for Union soldiers. Root stole the melody for “God Save Ireland.”
Later, Woolston’s children’s hymn text was paired with that familiar melody.
Over time, it became a staple in Sunday schools across America.
