You know, in a world filled with super-powered gorillas, rage-fueled cosmic cats, and a flying dog whose name probably inspired the digital currency of the “metaverse”, a magical, ancient scarab actually sounds rather commonplace. But this is a comic book character we’re talking about, so it would be surprising if Blue Beetle didn’t have a convoluted backstory. The character actually originated in 1939, as the featured superhero of Fox’s short-lived comic book publication house. Debuting in The Mystery Men issue #1, Dan Garret was a regular cop by day and the masked, investigative vigilante known as Blue Beetle by night. In other words, he was basically Fox’s version of Batman, except he wasn’t all that rich and his increased strength & agility came from a secret formula called Vitamin 2X. Over time, the Blue Beetle evolved into a more traditional Golden Age superhero and was given his own series. But Fox soon went out of business, and then Charlton Comics- who had obtained the rights to Blue Beetle- sold its entire gallery of supers to DC Comics in 1983, which is how the character ended up traveling from “Earth 4” to the main DC continuity during “Crises on Infinite Earths”. Since then, he’s become one of its most-influential characters, becoming possibly the best DC superhero outside of the Justice League. But what is Blue Beetle all about? And how did he go from literal obscurity to becoming an inspiration for Alan Moore’s Watchmen? This video will answer all that, and more; this is Blue Beetle’s Origins – Explored.
