At –70°C on a windswept Arctic plain, an 80-year-old Yakut grandmother and her 8-year-old granddaughter live behind a giant standing stone in a half-buried wooden-and-stone shelter. Before dawn, a starving tiger’s roar and fresh wolf tracks force the old woman to clear crushing snow, fortify the sheep pen, and boil bone soup just to keep them alive. By day, the granddaughter trudges alone along a frozen road to a distant modern school while her grandmother hauls firewood, melts snow, and hangs precious meat to freeze-dry behind the rock. When night falls and a full wolf pack closes in on the sheep, the old woman lights an oil-soaked fire line around the pen, swinging a blazing torch between stone wall and snow, driving back both wolves and prowling tiger so that her sheep survive and her granddaughter can keep going to school tomorrow.
