Just a note: ‘I got to’ and ‘I’ve got to’ are different. ‘I got to’ means I was allowed to or permitted to do something. ‘I’ve got to’ means I must or have to do something. In spoken English, we tend to reduce ‘I’ve’ to ‘I’ even though that is grammatically incorrect.

Hi, my name is Tim Carrey. Welcome to my video lesson. Today we’re going to practice some more patterns and I’ll help you with your pronunciation. Let’s get started.
In this sentence ‘I have got to_________’ we use the contraction ‘I’ve’. So ‘I have’ becomes ‘I’ve’, ‘I’ve got to ______.’ Then from ‘I’ve got to ____’ we can reduce ‘I’ve’ to ‘I’ and ‘got to’ to ‘gotta’. For the first example ‘I’ve got to go’ is reduced to ‘I gotta go’. So please repeat after me. We’ll take it slowly and then we’ll speed it up. I gotta go. I gotta get a haircut. Yeah that’s right, I gotta get a haircut. I can’t see anything. I gotta go to the bathroom. You are acting so weird and immature. In this sentence ‘I have to_____’. ‘have to’ is reduced to ‘hafta’, ‘I hafta’. I hafta get my passport renewed. I hafta do it. Do what? I hafta cut it. Cut what? Your guitar strings. What? No! I hate your music. I hafta buy a new computer. Yup, I really hafta buy a new computer. ‘He or She has to ____’ becomes ‘He or She has-ta___.’ He hasta quit smoking. She hasta stop changing her hair color. I think I want blond hair. I think I want orange hair. I think I want black hair. She hasta pick up the kids from school. He hasta go to the dentist. No way, I’m not going back to the dentist. …Really bad memories. Poor baby. She hasta make an appointment to see the doctor. He hasta marry her. You got my daughter pregnant. You hafta marry her now. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m I totally screwed or what? She hasta give a presentation at the next conference. She hasta practice singing more. I agree. He hasta shave his beard. What do you mean I hafta shave my beard. Ok you’re right. She hasta work late tonight. ‘He or she has got to ______’ becomes ‘He’s or She’s gotta’. He’s gotta get a haircut. What are you talking about? I don’t need a haircut. My hair is fine, fine really. Weren’t you listening. She’s gotta get her nails done. He’s gotta try an online dating service. I gotta try this online dating service. I gotta find my perfect match. You’re so cute.
