The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.

Critics called it brilliant, excellent, and legendary after they tasted the 2020 Bordeaux from barrel. It was certainly a different kind of vintage, as harvest took place under COVID-19 restrictions, but the vintage conditions were very good. Now that pretty much all of the wines have been bottled and released to the market, how do those 2020s taste now?
I asked my team to put together a blind tasting of 2020s – I asked for a range of affordable wines that offer great value for money.
So are the 2020s from Bordeaux as good as it gets or just ok? The 2020 vintage in Bordeaux is considered excellent and possibly a future modern classic, despite the pandemic year.

While we were fighting over toilet paper at the supermarket, the vineyards were doing much better: The year started Warm and wet, leading to early and successful budburst and flowering. Summer was Hot and dry, with some vines suffering drought stress; thunderstorms provided relief but also brought some hail and mildew. The harvest was very odd, though.

Wineries usually have to bring in and house groups of pickers for harvest, but during the lockdowns, the process became much more complicated and made the experience less charming – no long lunches over wine and fine food ... The process started very early, mid-August, for dry whites and crémants. While Merlot picking started mid-September, Cabernet Sauvignon shortly after; most grapes were picked before heavy autumn rains. Some late-ripening varieties like Cabernet Franc were affected by it, though.

The grape quality was high as drought had concentrated the grapes, resulting in rich, intense fruit. Yields were slightly below average, but the fruit was generally healthy and of high quality. In Bordeaux, the new vintage is tasted in spring following the harvest. At that point, the wines have finished fermentation but are still in the barrel.
