Oketsu is a term used frequently in the Kampo lexicon to describe pathological changes at the blood level including: stagnation, accumulation, blockage and turbidity. Suidoku is a Kampo term used specifically to describe the accumulation of potentially harmful fluids in the intestinal tract. Kampo considers both these pathologies to be primary causative factors in many disease presentations.
The methods of assessment and clinical evidence used to establish a diagnosis of Oketsu and Suidoku will be discussed in detail. There is repeated evidence in the Kampo literature of both diagnostic and treatment methods developed specifically to deal with these complex pathologies.
