If you'd like to compress but preserve the structure of a folder/s you want to store or transfer, zip or tar are great commands to facilitate you in this task.
They are most of the time preinstalled on linux and mac or the WSL. If they are not, they could be easily installed with the "sudo apt get install" command followed by the name of the program of interest.
