In 1975, prominent Black leaders formed the Black Americans to Support Israel Committee (BASIC), which published a seven-part declaration endorsed by 200 prominent figures including Coretta Scott King, Martin Luther King Sr., Rosa Parks, and Arthur Ashe. The declaration emphasized that “blacks and Jews have common interests in democracy and justice,” noting that Jewish individuals and organizations had been staunch allies in the struggle for racial justice. Civil rights leader Bayard Rustin argued that “Zionism is not racism, but the legitimate expression of the Jewish people’s self determination,” drawing on the Black community’s 400-year experience with slavery and discrimination.
