Continuing on my series looking at the maintenance on some of my old LGB locomotives, this time we're going to dig into an LGB 2119. This is a model of a Cooke Mogul painted in LGB's Lake George and Boulder fictional livery. This was the less expensive alternative to the 2019S, the Colorado and Southern mogul with sound, though it's built on very nearly the same mechanism.
All in all the work went well enough, I didn't find any broken or worn out gears in the drive train, at least not the ones that I looked at, and there wasn't at on of dried grease all over the place either.
That said, after re-greasing, replacing the traction tire, and struggling through the reassembly process. While the locomotive is in generally good operation condition it's definitely showing it's age too. These models were never the strongest operating around LGB's R1 radius curves. When new it was fine, but 30 years down the road, we'll it's no so happy about those curves anymore. Potentially replacing the motor and gear train would get things in working order, but that's not a project I want to take on right now either.
