Rangers met Alania Vladikavkaz in the qualifying round for the 1996 Champions League and won the first leg 3-1 despite trailing at half-time to a goal from Igor Yanovski. Derek McInnes equalised on his European debut before Ally McCoist eventually scored, after missing a number of chances to give Rangers the lead. Gordan Petric headed in just after Alania were reduced to ten men when Artur Pagaev was sent off while Alania missed a late chance to get back into the tie when Yanovski missed a late penalty.
