On 16th March 1926, Henry Seagrave broke the world land speed record on Ainsdale beach, driving a 4-Litre Supercharged Sunbeam Tiger, nicknamed "Ladybird". The Sunbeam's average speed over the two runs was 152.33mph.
In March 2016, the Sunbeam returned to the Lancashire coast as the star of the Southport Festival of Speed, organised by the Aintree Circuit Club.
The single seater Tiger was brought over from Utah, where it formed part of a collection owned by Indian businessman Vijay Mallya. The car was driven by the Mallya collection's manager, former Ferrari technician, Malcolm Page.
As part of the re-enactment, the Sunbeam was joined by a recreation of Sir Malcolm Campbell's 1927 Napier Blue Bird, which took to the sands together with 45 pre-WWII cars.
Unfortunately, due to the gusty winds on the day, I was unable to capture any usable audio of the mighty V12 engines. Maybe I will have better luck, if a similar event is arranged to commemorate the centenary of the record breaking run, in 2026.
