At 4,458ft Blood Mountain is the sixth highest peak in Georgia and the highest peak along the Appalachian Trail Georgia Section. There are many folk tales about how Blood Mountain got its name. One of the most popular being a bloody battle between the Cherokee and Muscogee Native Americans. Although highly unlikely as zero remains or artifacts supporting this theory have ever been found on the mountain. More than likely the name simply comes from the reddish colored lichen and rhododendron growing near the summit of the mountain. Out There! reached the summit by following the Byron Herbert Reese Trail up to the three way intersection at the Appalachian Trail. The trail is moderate a min but we would say this trail is on a 'hard' level for most day hikers. As the entire trail almost you will be climbing yes climbing over rocks and crossing several stream crossings. The trail is inclined the entire way to the summit with very little level or downhill sections. This trail is probably not for most kids walking on their own. I'd say you will be carrying them the majority of the trail. At the summit there is a shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and does feature some fantastic views... As seen in the video. We hope you enjoy the video and we will see yall...

This trail is considered moderate-hard by Out There! Please remember that this trail as many in the Blood Mountain Wilderness has very little buildings, signs, and the trails are less blazed than some you may be used to.
