Did you know that the U.S. economy has bounced back to about where it was pre-Covid, but Hawaii’s hasn’t? In fact, the state’s economy has recovered the LEAST of all 50 states. We are in last place.
In this video, we talk to Hawai‘i economist Paul Brewbaker and Oceanit founder Patrick Sullivan, who recently co-authored a white paper called “Hawaii – Losing the Future?”
They talk about an absence of leadership in Hawaii that encourages big ideas, innovation, collaboration, and lets people take chances. They discuss how the University of Hawaii has become more of a vocational training school than a research school, how that could change, and why we need to enable human capital. All are optimistic about today’s young people, but agree we need to figure out how to encourage children that there’s a future for them here in Hawaii and to think outside the box.
