Causes of Refraction -
Further, the angle of bending of a ray would depend upon difference in speeds of light in the two media.
Large the difference in speeds of light, greater will be the angle of bending and vice-versa.
For example, light will bend through larger scale in going from air to glass, than in going from air to water.
This is because speed of light in air os 3 x 108 m/s and speed of light in glas is 2 x 108 m/s, whereas speed of light in water is 2.25 x 108 m/s.
The speed of light in vacuum is a fundamental constant of nature.
It is represented by c.
The speed of light in vacuum is taken as c = 3 x 108 m/s.
In air, the speed of light is only marginally less, compared to that in vacuum.
Therefore, speed of light in air is also taken as 3 x 108 m/s.
A transparent substance in which light can travel is called an optical medium.
For example, air, water, alcohol, glass, etc. are some of the common optical media.
Different optical media have different optical densities.
Therefore, speed of light in different optical media is different.
A medium in which speed of light is more is said to be optically rarer medium.
And a medium in which speed of light is less is said to be optically denser medium.
Light travels faster in an optically rarer medium and light travels slower in an optically denser medium.
