🧠 Everything You Need to Know About the Occipital Lobe — Plus a Real Case Study
The occipital lobe — the brain’s visual command center — is often underestimated.
Yet it is the region where light becomes image, and image becomes meaning.
In this presentation, I break down:
🔍 What the occipital lobe does:
Visual processing (color, motion, shape)
Object recognition
Reading and spatial orientation
💥 What happens when it’s damaged:
Cortical blindness
Visual agnosia
Hallucinations or motion blindness
🧠 Case Study Highlight:
A 42-year-old male suffered bilateral occipital lobe infarction due to posterior cerebral artery stroke.
Despite having healthy eyes, he became functionally blind — unable to see, yet unaware of it (Anton’s syndrome).
This case reminds us that seeing isn’t just about the eyes — it’s about the brain seeing for us.
🎓 Presented as part of the Neurosurgery Roundtable at European University Cyprus, this case deepened my understanding of the delicate relationship between structure, function, and patient experience. #OccipitalLobe #BrainLobeStories #Neurosurgery #CorticalBlindness
