Organ description:
In 1695-6 Schnitger made a new organ for the church in Noordbroek, using pipework from an older organ. The pedal division was placed behind the main case. Hinsz made some alterations in 1768, including new chests and keyboards and a few new registers.
Freytag’s rebuild of 1809 was even more drastic: while retaining the style of the original case, he widened it with pedal towers and connecting flats, thereby altering the appearance radically. The change was further emphasized by new pipeshades, wings, and decorations atop the case, and also a curtain painted on the wall behind the organ. Freytag also replaced the front pipes and the wind system, and substituted a Gedekt 8’ for the pedal mixture.
In 1855 the instrument was restored by Petrus van Oeckelen. At this time the rugwerk lost three registers, and a pedal coupler was added. These alterations were reversed in 1958 by Cor Edskes and the local organist, Simon Graafhuis. The reeds were repaired and partly restored by Winold van der Putten and Berend Veger since 1983, and the disposition is now as it was in 1809.
The organ in Noordbroek can boast a significantly authentic sound, and is one of the most important Schnitger organs anywhere.
The influence of Freytag is clearly visible: almost identical curtain-like carvings and urns are found in Oostwold.
The cartouche under the rugwerk, in Louis XV style, documents Hinsz’s restoration of 1763. Below this, another caption commemorates Van Oeckelen’s work.
