Is it Worth Diving the Blue Hole, Belize? My Honest Experience

When I told my mate I was heading to Belize to dive the famous Great Blue Hole, his response was, "I've done that, it was crap." But undeterred, I went ahead and booked the full-day, 3-dive excursion with Ambergris Divers, one of the top dive operators in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. And I have no regrets!

The trip included:

1) Dive 1: The Blue Hole
2) Dive 2: Half Moon Wall
3) Lunch on Half Moon Caye – a pristine island home to a colony of blue-footed boobies.
4) Dive 3: Long Caye Reef (The Aquarium)
To be honest, my expectations for the Blue Hole were low after hearing my mate’s review. However, I found swimming between the massive stalactites at 43 meters to be a unique and eerie experience. The second dive at Half Moon Wall blew me away—the abundance of marine life, especially the Caribbean reef sharks coming within a meter of us, made it truly memorable.

Half Moon Caye was stunning—just having lunch there amidst the untouched beauty and wildlife would’ve been worth the price alone! The third dive, Long Caye Reef (The Aquarium), was unfortunately the letdown of the day. Visibility was poor, and despite seeing a few sharks and barracudas, it didn’t live up to its name.

Overall, I’d say diving the Blue Hole is definitely worth it, but go in knowing it’s more about the experience of the cavern and not for the marine life. Still, with the other dives and Half Moon Caye included, this trip is one I’d absolutely recommend!
